I have really been digging my face into this WordPress All in One book, and I am now to the theme development section. Hopefully this is where some of the fun begins. I really think that I would like to start making my own themes and also themes for purchase. Sorry, if the development of the site has been slow but I have been brushing up on my php knowledge.
Yesterday, I signed up for the free version of Elance.com. Elance is a web site for user to post jobs that they need done with a brief description of the work they need, and the price range they think it is worth or they can spend. Freelancers, like myself, then bid on the job, telling the poster a little about yourself and what you think that you would be able to do the for. The poster then has a list of freelance web designers, in my case, to choose from. In the free version that I signed up for Elance.com gives you a select number of “tokens” that you can use to bid for jobs. This way one person can go submit a bid to every posting on the site.
After signing in, I browsed through some postings, searching for postings mentioning WordPress. I then made a bid on 3 different projects. I did also mention to each of these posters that I was just starting and that I am by no means a professional, yet. The jobs that I made bids on were for small things like changing some fonts, changing a little css, and a few other minor changes that I think that I should have no problem with. I also think that I will be making a few bids a day until I get a job conformation. Keep your fingers crossed. It would be really cool to see some money flowing in to help get this project jump started a little.
Here are some easy to follow SEO or Search Engine Optimization techniques that will help you increase the number of visitors to your new web site or blog. First of all if you are using wordpress, like I am here, the code is already set with all sort of SEO tools, such as permalink editing, pinging, and 1,000s of plugins.
When writing a new post from the dashboard, not from quick post, under the title of the post is the permalink that is currently going to be assigned to your new post. After this link there is a edit button. When deciding on a good permalink, remember to leave out any “fluff” words(as, the, is, a, ect.), and also make sure they are relevant to the content in the post. For example, if you are writing about the Golden State Warriors last game. Your might have a post title like “Dubs surprising 4th quarter comeback” but you don’t want all this in the post URL. So, you might want to edit it to something like “Warriors_Clippers_Comeback”, this having only keywords relevant to the content in the post/article. Also don’t use the uncategorized category that wordpress gives you as a default, this gives no information to the web crawlers that search engines use.
When adding an image to your post or site you should always be filling out all informations fields that wordpress gives you. Fill in the caption, description and don’t leave the name of the image as DC_309.jpg, this gives search engines no important information. If you have a picture of Penelope Cruz from the movie Vanilla Sky, give a name like P_Cruz_VanillaSky.jpg. This helps web crawlers in determining what kind of image it is looking at. Not filling in image information is probably one of the most missed piece of SEO that blogger forget to complete.
Another way to help get your blog or site to the top of search engine ranks is to make a signature with a link to your site in it and start getting involved in forums and comment on other high ranking blogs with similar content. These links are going to help search engines determine whether the info on you site is important enough to rank high. You also wanna set a goal to get in the top 2 pages of search engines for the keywords related to your site, most users of search engines don’t make it passed the second page of results. You wanna get your site with is range. A cool tool to see how many links are out there that connect users to your site, in your google search bar type, link:www.yoursitename.com. This will give you a list of all the links to http://www.yoursitename.com. Pretty cool and very useful. Go find a site that you think is popular and see how many links are out there going to that site. Crazy how many you will see.
Also, add links in your posts to other posts of yours or to other pages on your site. This makes search engines think they are links going to your site. They don’t know/care that they are only from one of your pages to another of your pages. Easy quick little way to gain some links and hopefully increase your search engine rankings.
Hope this helps some of you. Thanks for reading.
I just verified my site with the Google webmaster tool. It was extremely easy if you follow the directions that are given to you via link on your blogs dashboard. It does help to have more than one window open so that you can copy and paste the meta tag that google gives you once you log into your google account. The whole process took about 5 mins. at most. Sorry such a short post but I gotta go to work.

As you can see I have changed the theme of the blog from Wu Wei to the Free Quintus theme. I think it looks a little crisper and I think that for now the layout is a little more of what I am looking for. Eventually, down the road, I plan to code my own theme but I would like to get myself a little more comfortable with WordPress, pHp and MySQL. I hope that you like the new look. With the new theme my old header image did not fit into header on the Quintus theme, so I had to make a new one real quick. Since I am anal I had written down the fonts, colors, sizes and so forth of the first one I made so making a new one a little bigger and laid out slightly different wasn’t such a big deal.
Yesterday, I really didn’t do much in terms of upgrading the site because one it was Sunday(not sure if Sunday is going to be a work day or not yet), and two because the NFL playoffs were on. My brother and I, who is a Niner fan(I like the Detroit Lions), watched both games. The first was fun but looked like it was going to be a blown out early. Then the 49ers turned on the defense and started getting to Matt Ryan. Though a late fourth quarter drive by the Falcons made the game a nail biter. The second game went just the way that I thought it would, with the Ravens coming out on top. Hope everyone is ready for the “Har-bowl”.
Today, I made myself a logo and a header. Nothin special, but crisp and to the point. I used the Stencil font for the SMJ and used Georgia Bold for the Online studios and tag line. I hunk it brings a little bit more life to the blog. I hope you like it. Feel free to leave any comments about it below.
I also got through the first few chapter of the WordPress All-in-One for Dummies book. I am now about to get into some for the nitty gritty stuff. Hopefully, you will be ale to see some f he stuff that I learn here on the site soon. That’s it for today. Hope all is well. Also no bay yet But it should be here any day now.
Thanks for reading.
Today, I went to the bookstore and looked through a number of books and made the decision that I was going to start by focusing on one medium of web design, wordpress. I picked up wordpress all-in-one for dummies. I have used wordpress a few times in the past and large percentage of the web projects that I have see online have using this platform. Not to mention it is and Open Source Software, which means it is free. SO, I will be spending the next week or so reading through this text book. I will be getting myself re-familiar with MySQL and PHP two languages that I have played around with in the past but am no expert at.
Site Updates: Today I also fiddled with the theme customization and coloring. I added an About Me page, which for now contains yesterdays post, and added a portfolio page, which I will be adding to as we learn and start completing some jobs for people/businesses. Through gmail I also set up and email account for email@example.com where you are more than welcome to send me any questions, concerns, comments. Thats if for today, off to server some italian dinner.
Thanks for reading.
